Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) is pleased to announce the introduction of a new, minimally invasive surgical option for men experiencing symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

The ThuLEP (Thulium Laser Enucleation of the prostate) is a significant advancement over traditional surgical approaches such as Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), green light laser and open/simple prostatectomy. The state-of-the-art procedure offers improved patient outcomes, reduced hospital stays, shorter catheterization times, and enhanced surgical efficiency.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a highly prevalent condition among aging men that creates a significant demand for urological services.

“If you think about it logically, every man with an enlarged prostate who is experiencing symptoms - such as a weak stream, waking up at night to pee, frequent voiding, or relying on a catheter they cannot get rid of - would qualify for this procedure,” says Dr. Haider Abed, Urologist, Windsor Regional Hospital.

“ThuLEP offers superior hemostasis and applicability across all prostate sizes. Reoperation rates are nearly zero percent, and patients achieve stronger streams and are far more likely to remain catheter-free."

With the adoption of ThuLEP, Windsor Regional Hospital becomes one of only three healthcare centres in Ontario to offer this specialized procedure to patients.

“This new, innovative surgical option is just another adoption of evidence-based, advanced surgical techniques, positioning Windsor Regional Hospital as a regional leader in urologic surgery,” says Kristin Kennedy, President & CEO, Windsor Regional Hospital.

More than 50 ThuLEP cases are expected in the first year.
