A visible new chapter in the construction of the new hospital began this month, with the project's first structural concrete pour.

This work marks the first permanent structural component of the project and will form part of a tunnel connecting the future Education and Administration Centre to the Fancsy Family Hospital during later phases of construction.

When the new hospital opens, this tunnel will serve as a critical underground connection, allowing the safe and efficient movement of supplies, equipment, and staff between the buildings, while keeping them away from patient and visitor areas and the outdoor elements.

"This first concrete pour represents years of planning, coordination and preparation," said Mike Coombs, Windsor Regional Hospital Director of Project Delivery. “More importantly, it marks the beginning of the permanent structures that will ultimately form Windsor-Essex's new regional hospital."

In addition to this work, substantial progress has taken place across the project site over the past month, including installation of the water main and storm sewer infrastructure.

The first major structure to emerge on the site will be the parking garage, with work on that expected to become increasingly visible later this fall. The Administration and Education Centre will follow, as Phase 1 advances through 2027.

While work progresses on site, the project team is continuing to advance procurement efforts for future phases. The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process for Phase 2, the largest and most complex phase, is now closed. The Request for Proposals (RFP) is expected to be released later this fall.
