Yesterday at a ceremony in Toronto, Dr. Caroline Hamm was awarded with a Human Touch Award for the work she does advocating for top quality care close to home, for patients in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent. The Awards are presented annually by Cancer Care Ontario to healthcare professionals and volunteers who demonstrate exceptional and compassionate patient care.
Fellow Oncologists, Dr. Indryas Woldie and Dr. Mohammad Jarrar nominated Dr. Hamm for the prestigious award noting Dr. Hamm’s leadership in advocating for patients in the Erie St. Clair LHIN to receive stem cell transplant care close to home.
In 2016 Dr. Hamm spearheaded the Autologous Day One Program which allows patients in the Erie St. Clair LHIN, who have to leave town for Stem Cell treatment to return home for follow-up care and treatment the day after surgery. "Those patients used to stay in Hamilton or London for 2-3 weeks after a transplant, which is very inconvenient and expensive," said Dr. Woldie. "With Day One Repatriation, we have around 50 patients who have been able to stay here and get good care close to home."
As part of a provincial committee, Dr. Hamm was also an advocate for area residents facing long waits for stem cell treatments in Ontario, to get approval for out-of-province care. As a result, some patients in Erie St. Clair are now able to receive the procedures, funded by OHIP, at the Karmanos Cancer Centre in Detroit, Michigan.
The award also recognizes Dr. Hamm’s work in cancer research and her humanitarian efforts. As Clinical Lead for the Windsor Cancer Research Group, Dr. Hamm is currently overseeing the trial of Dandelion Root Tea for cancer therapy and a trial examining a new approach to treating triple negative breast cancer.
Both patients and coworkers supported Dr. Hamm’s nomination for the Human Touch Award. The video below highlights some of the ways she has "touched" their lives in her role at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre.
Congratulations to Dr. Hamm on this wonderful recognition!
