Vice President, Emergency and Medicine Programs - 18.1099

Job Summary:

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Vice President, Emergency and Medicine Programs is responsible is responsible for the quality of patient care provided, for oversight of the programs and services, and for achieving financial and strategic objectives. This position is responsible for fostering a culture receptive to the continuous changes in healthcare. The incumbent will optimize our ability to assess, direct and implement quality, patient-centered care within the clinical programs within the portfolio. This includes developing objectives for and monitoring actual departmental performance in areas including patient experience, employee performance, financial management, physician relations, and interdepartmental communication and relations. The incumbent will collaborate with colleagues across the organization to positively impact the delivery of care system-wide.


  • The incumbent oversees the operation of the Emergency and Medicine services;
  • Oversees the patient experience and engages staff in promoting positive patient outcomes and satisfaction levels;
  • Develops, implements and monitors compliance with nursing standards of practice;
  • Ensures departmental compliance with the requirements of regulatory and accreditation agencies;
  • Takes appropriate action to correct issues regarding non-compliance with policies, procedures, and standards;
  • Prepares recommendations for operational and capital budgets to support the needs of each department;
  • Assists with budget preparation, allocates funds within the budget limit to accomplish objectives and monitors variance against budget;
  • Monitors financial performance for cost centres and takes appropriate action as required;
  • Supports the leadership teams in developing staffing plans and evaluates the appropriateness of staffing levels and schedules;
  • Coaches and develops leadership team and makes recommendations for future development;
  • Oversees the development and evaluation of unit-based quality improvement activities;
  • Facilitates case reviews and root cause analysis for occurrences;
  • Participates in labour relations meetings, grievances and arbitrations as required;
  • Maintains active membership on departmental and hospital committees.


  • Master’s Degree with an undergraduate and/or graduate degree, nursing preferred. 
  • A minimum of five years of progressive nursing leadership in multiple service lines at a VP/Divisional Director level in an acute care setting is required. 
  • A demonstrated record of accomplishment as an effective administrator who has created and managed change successfully. 
  • The ability to communicate and interact well with people from various levels within the organization is critical. 
  • Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment,
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think analytically, inventively, and independently.
  • Ability to communicate in the French Language would be an asset.
