Therapeutic Recreation is a process that utilizes functional intervention, education and recreation participation to enable persons with physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social limitations to acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally, function independently with the least amount of assistance and participate as fully as possible in society. Recreation Therapy plays an important part in both patient recovery and enhancing quality of life. A qualified Recreation Therapist can assist patients in making leisure choices that are best suited to their needs, interests and strengths. The benefits of Therapeutic Recreation can be seen in many areas including the physical, mental, social and cultural domains.

How does the Therapeutic Recreation Process Work?
- The Recreation Therapist conducts an assessment of the patient's abilities, interests, needs and desires.
- Patient/family goals are set based on assessment findings.
- A Care Plan is designed to achieve goals.
- The Care Plan is put into action.
- Progress is evaluated to determine how well the patient is meeting their goals and to revise the plan, if necessary.
- Follow-up.

Specialty Programs at Windsor Regional Hospital
- Snoezelen: a sensory experience brought to patients' rooms or in group areas to provide gentle sensory stimulation and relaxation
- Intergenerational Partnerships with Glengarda School, Christ the King School and the WRH Workplace Child Care Centre.
- Community Inclusion: outings, facilitation of patient Therapeutic Horseback Riding classes, Tai Chi classes on site conducted by volunteers from the Tai Chi Association.
Family Members / Friends of Patients
Family members and friends of patients play a key role in the accomplishments and goal attainment of patients. Our service encourages full participation of family members and friends in all activities. Their participation and support are essential components in re-integration and inclusion activities to the Community or within the hospital/facility. Family pet visits are encouraged to enhance normalization for patients.

Referral Instructions
Recreation Therapists receive referrals for all patients who are admitted to their assigned program areas. Additional referrals are received from other program areas of the hospital and are responded to based on staffing availability.
